Less radiation with digital x-rays
Unlike traditional X-rays, which require film and take longer to develop, Digital X-rays provide instant results with far less radiation exposure. This allows our team to detect issues such as cavities, infections, or bone loss more quickly and accurately. Additionally, the images produced by Digital X-rays can be easily stored and shared, ensuring that patients have access to their dental records at any time and facilitating communication with specialists if needed. The reduced radiation and faster process make Digital X-rays a safer and more convenient option for both children and adults.
Intraoral Cameras
Another advanced technology we use at Gallagher & Kuhn Dental Group is Intraoral Cameras. These small, lightweight cameras are used to capture real-time images of the inside of a patient’s mouth. With an intraoral camera, we can closely examine hard-to-reach areas of the teeth and gums, helping us identify potential problems early on. The camera images are displayed on a monitor, allowing both the patient and dentist to view and discuss the findings in detail. This visual approach enhances communication, helps patients better understand their oral health, and makes it easier for us to explain treatment options.
Digital Impressions
Digital Impressions are another technological advancement that enhances our dental services. Traditional impressions often involve messy, uncomfortable trays filled with goopy material that patients have to hold in their mouths for several minutes. With digital impressions, we use a small handheld device to take highly accurate, 3D images of the teeth and gums. This digital method is far more comfortable for patients and eliminates the need for the goopy mess of traditional molds. The images captured are incredibly precise, ensuring that crowns, bridges, and other restorations fit perfectly, leading to better results and less need for adjustments.
Do I really need dental x-rays?
X-rays are an important tool that dentists use to evaluate your teeth and jaw bones. It is the only way dentists can see cavities between teeth and infections at the tooth root. X-rays show changes in the bone level that may indicate problems to be monitored or treated (like periodontal disease). Some patients worry about the frequency of dental X-rays or radiation exposure.
Typical X-rays taken at a cleaning/exam appointment are recommended once per year for the reasons listed above. At our office, we use digital X-rays, which means the patient is exposed to a tiny fraction of radiation. One dental X-ray is about 5% of the radiation that you would be exposed to on a flight from New York to California, and two dental X-rays are similar to eating a banana! We also offer other imaging options: 3D X-rays called CBCT and iTero and CEREC scans which have no radiation at all!
