What is a tooth sealant?
Tooth sealants are a highly effective preventive treatment that can significantly reduce the risk of cavities, especially on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These back teeth, or molars, are particularly susceptible to cavities because of the deep grooves and fissures that are difficult to clean thoroughly with regular brushing. Sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of these molars to create a smooth barrier that prevents food particles and bacteria from getting trapped in these grooves.
Sealants are most commonly recommended for first and second permanent molars, typically around the age of 6 and 12. At this stage, these teeth have fully erupted and are most vulnerable to decay. Sealants can be applied quickly and easily during a routine dental visit, and the procedure does not require any anesthetic. It’s a painless, non-invasive treatment that offers long-lasting protection against cavities, often for several years with proper care.
While sealants are most commonly used for children and teens, adults can also benefit from them, especially if they have deep grooves in their teeth. Sealants are particularly beneficial for individuals who are prone to cavities or who may have difficulty maintaining optimal oral hygiene.
